There are things that change outside but remain the same inside and others (such as the new Canon EOS 40D), by contrast, have few new shape, but inside is another thing.
Canon has chosen to preseguire in the wake of the “tradition” (which in the digital is measured in years, not decades) for a very simple reason: the body of the machine 20D and 30D and now the EOS 40D, which is more well made, in the category, almost perfect.

We are talking about a so-called reflex “semi-professional” of a digital camera, on the one hand, attracts a large number of professional photographers (reports, but also photos of weddings and photo studio), and not many photographers but sincere passionate professionals who want to make the leap in quality abandoning the reflex “enter level” to enjoy something better.

Canon EOS 40D - Body Machine
The “shell” of the new machine is similar to that of previous models: size and weight, but enough to challenge comfortably reflex and hear perfectly balanced (an entirely different feeling than, for example, to EOS 400D). The body of the machine is clean; commands well prepared and in a number not excessive. In short, even for a non canonist it is a pleasure to remove the machine from the box to race on the street and to take no longer can.

The new body offers better protection against dust and splashes. Even the door for access to the memory slots is now well sealed.
New and improved, the viewfinder, which has a 0.95 x magnification and shows how to shoot Black & White and ISO sensitivity.
For perfectionists point out that among the options for the Canon EOS 40D also included three glasses focus interchangeable.

On the back there is now an LCD display from 3 inches and 230,000 points better than the previous year, but lower than soprendente we really had the opportunity to try on new D3 and reflex Nikon D300 and Sony Alpha A700.

Canon EOS 40D - CMOS Sensor
The choice of Canon rose others-the number of megapixels up to 12, while the CMOS sensor in APS-C EOS 40D is “satisfied” of 10 megapixels - may have surprised many, but I am not sure 2 megapixels or more to rely less on the choice between one or the other machine. On the practical difference has little or nothing.
It much more loyalty in the representation of color, the ability to “breaking” the shadows showing details and well represent the high lights. It has much more to the quality of photos taken with sensitivity set to high ISO.
Canon has been working on mikro and has managed to reduce the fall at the corners. The sensor is supported by the new image processor Digic III.

Up to 1600 ISO response of the machine is excellent, both in terms of resolution and color, both on the always thorny, low in fat. A ISO 3200, however, the noise is felt. Excellent dynamic range also. Differences with professional Canon EOS 1D Mark III, which we tried at the same time, are really minimal.

Canon EOS 40D - Performance
The machine has a digital-analog converter to 14 bits. The autofocus system has been improved and is faster than the EOS D30 and shines even in difficult light conditions.
The gusts? A pact to have a fast card, it works quietly with a cadence up to 6.5 fps (frames per second), with almost unlimited files and JPEG with a roof of 16-17 photos in RAW before clog the buffer memory.
The processor Digic III magic ago and consumes less power. Canon declares autonomy up to 800 shots with a battery.

Canon EOS 40D - Live Mode View
The possibility of a framework with the display (as is done with compact cameras) is now a reality even on reflex. It is however the first attempts and things are not perfect. Using Live View involves, for example, the rapid depletion of the battery (the autonomy is reduced to one quarter).
The Canon 40D offers two modes of operation of Live View. Using autofocus system should “bear” the blackout caused by the movement of the mirror.

Canon EOS 40D - Conclusions
Pulling sums (derived from this first contact rapid) Canon 40D represents a qualitative leap important than the 30D. A jump far greater than that between the 20D and 30D. Now Canon can offer a semi-professional quality, moreover at a price (around 1,100 euros, on e-commerce sites for the body of the machine) really interesting. It brings a lot of respect to spending. It already worked well with the 20D (which we still have in our fleet), now with the 40D …

The canonists have no doubt, but what if you are not among the fans of the brand (or if you do not already have a rich set in Canon)?
The alternatives are not lacking. The new Sony Alpha A700 offers more of the 12 megapixel sensor, a display actually higher than seen so far and, more importantly, the stabilizer on the camera body (there is no need to purchase stabilized objectives, heavier and more expensive).
The reflex is, however, lacks the display and no additional offers the same image quality to ISO 1600.
